The collet in my Freud FT2000 looks a lot like a little ER type collet.
They snap in the nut and are extracted by it. In the pic the nut has a
collet in it.

To set the depth, I drop bearing balls into the chuck as spacers and
pull them out with a magnet if the motor is pointed up. If I need a
specific height I cut a rod slightly amaller than the bit shank to the
right length. That way I can switch bits and if I keep the spacers and
bits organized the depth stays predictable. This is a cheapie way to
avoid the pulldown induced errors you get with any locking taper.
