Jon is correct. The primary reason for the G340 is to match the encoder
to the software. It was Mariss' solution to my complaint that with a
G320 and a 1000 line (4000 pulse/rev) encoder I was running out of steps
in my software and that was limiting my max feed. It does have a side
benefit of letting you use a ground common that some people like. If you
are having to buy encoders anyway, go with G320s to save the $$ and just
buy encoders that give you a step/in which your software can handle.
