Any slack/backlash in the system would definitely make it non linear...
PID systems such as Geckos have a very hard time with non linear
movements, especially around an end point.

We've got a Fagor DRO with quadrature scales on our mill that we'll be
removing shortly. We especially bought that DRO because the scales had
quadrature output... if I ever get caught up I'll test it.
