Wade,
Emco is a good source for inexpensive acme rod; they also sell steel
nuts. You could fool around with casting a nut in epoxy or milling
the nut from nylon to control backlash. Emco also offers linear
bearings and rails for decent money.
Be careful with ebay--I've seen stuff go for more than it cost
retail. Something about auctions. Look for salvage dealers; google
around and see what turns up.
