I ran into this problem on an Enco mill when I bought it a couple years
ago.
The issue with changing motors was that one couldn't get a single phase
motor of the correct HP in the same frame/face mount that the 3 phase
motor came in. Furthermore the price of a replacement motor was nearly
the same as the cost of a chassis VFD (ie KBC Electronics), so I opted
for the VFD instead of changing the motor. It proved to be an excellent
decision because we love the versatility the VFD control gives us.
