The heart of the issue is going simple technology vs. pieceing things
together.

A VSD is a simple device that has been shown to be very valuable in
the home shop. More than a few on the lists have one and switch
between the lathe and mill as need be.

It offers the ability to have your software control the motor speed.

My point of view is that any machine of more than 1 hp will need some
motor starting circuits. 3 phase motors need a combination motor
starter/disconnect with heaters for motor protection.

single phase will cost more in the long run. For an hobby home shop,
that is no big deal. for a profit shop that will be added expense.
with a risk.

A replacement 2hp 3phase will be easier to find than a single phase.

The VFD is a one part solution with extended benefits.

Maybe I should have added pro's and con's to the subject line.
