Not really. EMC needs the real time extensions to Linux. So, it won't run
on any Linux system that has not had the patches applied to the kernel.
That's the benefit of the BDI, all that work has been done for you.

Yes. But, you need some kind of interface with a DAC (digital to Analog
Converter) to send speed signals to the VFD. You also need something with
some sort of digital I/O to turn the spindle on and off.

My PPMC and Universal Stepper boards have these features, with several
options. You can also use the Servo-to-Go card. There may be some other
options as well. Let me know a little more about your machine, axis motors,
etc. and I might be able to recommend one of these products.
