My cousin, who is a machinist, told me that his shop is using some
form of dial or digital readout which operates off a friction wheel
running on the sides op the mill table. He was going to check out
the brand and let me know.

He did say that they didn't seem to do anything special to guard
against chips, etc.

This is food for thought. I had never considered using a rotary wheel and
friction. Yes I agree that the problem would be keeping the grot off the track but
it should be little trouble to enclose it all in an aluminium tube with sealed
ends. The errors in the mechanism could be programmed out after checking against a
known measure.
