The way I used to do this was to use a thin porous sheet over the vacuum
table. This sheet was simply thrown away when it got too cut up. The
stuff I used came from a shoe manufacturer and was meant for insoles.
If you have a good vacuum you can sometimes use thin MDF as the
sacrificial sheet.
