You might be able to try what I am currently assembling. I also need an
engraving spindle, and have an old cordless drill which has seen better
days. It was a 12v style with keyless chuck, it only had a bad battery. If
you remove the shaft, at least on mine, it has fairly substantial size, and
is set in decent ball bearings. I will obtain a larger bearing for the
business end (14mm ID) and construct some bearing carriers, install it on my
mill's head on an aluminum plate, and direct drive the shaft using the same
motor, about 12,000 rpm, directly in line, connected via a rubber hose.
There is a similar design on somebody's web site I once saw, can't find the
link though. You could even step it down in speed with the enclosed gear
train, but that isn't necessary for engraving. Hope this helps.

yea right, i have 3 and 2 are bushings of bronze! also i have a dental drill
motor from the old style cable drill, rated at 15000 rpm, it has bronze
bushings too. all my dremmels have too much wabble for engraving anything.
