this is embarrasing, but someone "might" learn from it...I had the cable going to the wrong DB25(?) on the back of the computer, instead of being plugged into the "printer" port, it was plugged into who knows what????......
the first cable I tried was female/female....the correct cable is male/female.....I figured it out when I saw an extra cable just sitting on the table, I knew I had used it before for some reason :)
