Hi Todd

Yes I have many spindle catalogs and have designed many
myself. As an engineer I find it a little intriguing
to put the design specs and construction methods such
that something of such great precision could be built
in a home shop without a lot of the tools professionals have.

I think it could be done though.

We may end up with another home shop machinist article here!

If you go to gilman spindles and slides you will see the same setup you are
talking about in there light duty spindle set up. They basically do the same
thing. Also the same principlas are used in all gundrilling splindles.As you
are aware of the tolerences are very critical which i am not sure the
hobbist understand.
