No catch really... high rpm opens some possibilities with
small diameter mills and intricate machining.
Some of the routers are a bit noisy though. The bearings might last
only a few hundred hours at most, but that should not be a problem for
hobby applications.
The expensive industrial routers (Perske and Columbo) are quieter,
brushless, and more accurate, but if you are not running 8 hours a day
it should not be that much of an issue.
Many woodworking routers that you mention have poor run out,
but that can be fixed pretty easily. The bearings in them are spring
preloaded ABEC-1 good to about 0.0005". The errors are usually due
to the accuracy of the collet machining.

So, I was in the hardware store today...
And I was looking at lots of pretty nice routers. 8K-30KRPM... Not too
shabby. On most it looks like it'd be pretty easy to remount them...
So.. A 30,000 RPM spindle would be damned nice to have on a mill,
especially if you were running really small bits with high-feed rates,
the motors are powerful - 1KW for many of them, and at router prices,
it's certainly a lot cheaper than the $3000 industrial spindle motors I
drool over in engineering magazines.
That said.. If this is the dream, then where's the heartbreak? What's
the catch?
Why shouldn't I do this? :)
