RE: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] 1KW, 30KRPM Router as a Spindle/Motor?

Hi there,
Well, mainly I was looking at cutting some aluminum, and a little bit of
silver.
I'm just a hobbyist, so to be honest, the machine is not going to be
used in a real work environment.
Still, I will load it with some serious work - especially since I'm fond
of 3D geometry with profiling.
I just ordered the 10,500RPM spindle set for my Sherline Mill (I have
just a baby mill). Really, I'm doing only small work with my mill - I
tend to use 2-3MM mills most of the time (around 1/8").
The other thing I have been considering, is to use a router as my mill's
motor - then create a pulley so it could drive my sherine mill with a
little reduction at around 20,000RPM, or so.
Will open frame = metal in motor = shortcircuit = death?
Regards,
AbbyKatt

Hi;
The items you left out in your equation below make all the
difference. For example what is the intended usage, the frequency of
usage and acceptable runout.
The things that you are up agianst when using such hardware is fact that
these are often open frame motors. The motors are almost universally
series wound DC and the bearings don't last long.
Now the obvious thing is that router motors have been used for years in
systems handling wood or wood like materials. Not knowing you
intentions though makes specfic comments difficult.
Thanks
Dave
