Mill a raised circular boss on a piece of aluminum. That's an easy
one to measure the diameter across from several angles. Look
closely at the areas at 3:00, 6:00, 9:00 and 12:00 o'clock. Those
are positions where one axis is changing direction, axis backlash
will showup there.

Might as well mill a raised square boss and measure for squareness
too.

Maybe repeat the tests in steel.

There are a million other tests, but these should get you started.
