Let's see, that is 10,000 steps/inch * 72 / 60 = 12,000 steps/second.
That's no challenge at all, I think a Pentium Classic at 133 MHz could
handle
that with steppermod, and probably do OK even with freqmod. That is only
a transition on the step line every 42 uS.
