Sony, Renishaw and Heidenhain all have tape scale systems. One of them
is optical,
and not tolerant of debris, the others I think are pretty rugged. But,
this stuff is NOT
cheap. The read heads all run around $300 - 400 each, and the tapes are
a couple
hundred $ per meter.
