One of my e-mail newsletters directed me to a site that has a "new" linear magnetic encoder. There I found the datasheet at http://www.austriamicrosystems.com/eng/Products/Magnetic-Encoders/Linear-Encoders/AS5311/AS5311_Datasheet_v1_00 and an evaluation board at http://www.austriamicrosystems.com/eng/content/view/full/15431.%c2%a0 I believe the evaluation board was listed as $59.00 on their "buy now" site and the encoders were listed at $6.?? in 1000 pc quantities. It seems like this stuff was designed just for your application although I didn't get a chance to more than glance at the two .pdf files mentioned.
