Is there a medium-sized city (or larger) near you?

Check your local Community College. I live near Bellingham (80,000 people)
and the local CC has an excellent precision machining program and the
instructer was more than happy to have me do a couple of "custom" quarters
-- I paid the full tuition for each quarter and he gave me various sections
of materials from the normal four year program. Plus, I got to use the
equipment for some small projects.

Started off with the beginners learning how to write GCode from scratch (and
this has been invaluable). A working knowledge of trig is essential (or at
least, knowing where to look on the web for online calculators).

Progressed to grinding some toolbits and some manual lathe work (to see what
I could do) and then got promoted to a big Haas milling center.

The class was about 30 people of different levels and it was a lot of fun
getting to know them and talking about machining and stuff.

With you needing some reinforcement for learning, an environment like this
might be just the ticket. Very worst case scenario, you are out one
quarter's tuition (about $300 up here) and you learn GCode.

Good luck!
Dave
