Steven,
Personally, I would still go with the Gecko, Campbell , Mach2 setup. For the fact that how well they "like" each other. The motor you mention is a bit out of the range for the Gecko but, It would still drive it at approximately half its normal speed. The 9 amps is more than covered. I'm using the knee for Z axis with the same motors I mentioned prior (100 volt and 13.7 amp continuous) and I get 60 ipm rapids reliably. Even if you had to swap out with an Ebay special with lower voltage and higher amperage like a Baldor or Gould there are plenty of Nema 42's in the 100 dollar range available.
I'm a machinist also and cut teeth on the old NC tape readers. And have followed the string of "latest and greatest" controllers over the years. And this setup I'm using is worlds ahead of what I've used previuosly.

I see now ,from what you've said ,that I could have used Gecko
Drives on the machine I am working on..I didnt know that..You got my
curiousity up so I went and looked at the z axis servo motor on the
other mill.It says 151 volts at 9 amps..What servo drives would you
suggest for that machine?
Thanks again..

providing your power supply can deliver the amps required for the
continual rating of the servos. Stall torque is irrelevant because
the motor would fry anyway. I just fused the drives at 15 amps. 15
months of use and it has never stalled, blown a fuse or lost a step.
The servos are delivering 5 hp at the screw. And rapids of 120 ipm
are the norm.
