Eric,
As far as I know most guys use the most cost effective ball screw.
If it happens to be stainless, all the better. My machines all are
using steel ball screws and I don't even run coolant so rust is not a
real problem. My guess is that corrosion resistant ball screws my be
used in harsh environments where exposed to acid vapors or other
corrosives such as are found in the semiconductor industry. Heck,
every shop I ever worked in was so greasy and oily rusty machines was
generally not a problem.
I recommended that ball screw and ball nut to John because it was
cheap. It will certainly out last his 300 hour application.
