did mine: Mounted a solid state relay on the wire that operates the
motor starter contacts (the wire going to the solenoid on the motor
contacts). Then ran a pair of 22 gauge wires from the solid state
relay back to the Campbell breakout board.

This is not specif to that board. Any breakout manner, be is a
simple solder wire on the parallel cable itself or another IC in-
between. the parallel port itself should have enough to power a SSR.

I run 2N2222's and power mechanical relays. those can then handle any
voltage up to an amp for external devices.

I have a motor starter which has overload heaters and fuses for a
high current motor. The small relay in my panel handles the 110VAC
needed to pull in the starter.

The key is that you just need to assign an output pin in software and
connect it to something that can handle the load of the next device.

///What about opto-isolation? Wouldnt there be a risk of damaging the PC electronics wiring up auxillary equiptment directly to the port?

Other breakout boards have the ability to control Solid state relays however like the PMDX has no "watchdog" feature that monitors erroneous pulses from the PC (it didnt two years ago anyway and they didnt sound too concerned about changing it). Mine has tripped the software reset 3 or 4 times in the last year. What would've happened had this safety not been present? Old printer programs or something in XP try to talk to the port also evidently. It also handles the limit switches powers up the Geckos, etc. I'm going to do another machine and it will have the same Breakout board on it.
