  Alan,
the process is 'stachostic' meaning it usually does what we want
when we give the system good stuff to work with ( power, position,
environment etc). BUT it often does something unexpected
(thus stachostic). At these times the feedrate is inapproriate,
so we need to slow down. BUT there's times when the position
is inappropriate ( more badder ) and we need to LEAVE. The only
safe(r) place is where we;ve already been, so that brings up\
the >backwards<.
In hole drilling its along a single line. In senkung (form) it's to some
'sky-blue' point we've past thru previously. In wire edm, it's along the path
(often a 4 axis path where there's a top 2d path and a bottom 2d path
whose 2 endpoints are the upper and lower wire guides. the different
paths allow tapers of different sorts ).
