programs from drawings. The free and $100 stuff is simply a DNC
communications and editor program. A DNC program is used to
communicate to a stand alone CNC machine from a PC. This is usually
done over a serial port connection (Rs232), and the program sends the
G-code file over the wire to the CNC machine. When a controller has
a limited amount of memory, this is the only way to run a large
program. A small portion is sent, the machine runs that much of the
program, then reqests that more be sent doen th ewire to continue.
The PC does NOT send out step and direction, it only sends out the
text of a G-code file. The controller in the machine is a Fanuc,
Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Yasnac, Seimens, Heidenhein, etc,
commercial, industrial strength machine. NOT a PC based controller
that actually runs the machine's motors, like you would find with
EMC, Flashcut, Microkinetics, DeskNC, MaxNC, etc. I'm sure that I
will hear about the exceptions, but for the most part the machines
that need to use DNC are older beasts that have $2000 per 8-32K type
memory.
