Assuming it is going on the plasma cutter and assuming you will have
a multistage belt drive reduction between motor and belt drive then
just add the encoder to the final output of the reducer. That means
that several revolutions of the motor will equate to one of the
encoder lowering the pulse rate required for high rapids and saving
you an extra gearbox. Or put it on the jack shaft if you don't need
so much of a reduction. It needs to be as backlash free as possible
but then it did anyway.
