The idea has been discussed on the Geckodrive list. Although the effect
is the same as a step pulse multiplier as far as position goes, it isn't
the same with regard to the motor holding position. When you divide the
encoder pulse train, the uncertainty in shaft position increases, which
causes dither to be larger. Mariss basically says the motor is
"stiffer" with the input multiplier vs. a decoder divider.
