Why do they need to be routed?

Most commercial shops use etching and/or plating techniques to make
printed circuit boards. I think this is actually a much cheaper and faster
method, since the size and complexity of the board doesn't have any bearing
on the time to make the board. There are hundreds of prototype-volume
PCB fabricators in the US, and thousands overseas, all cutting each other's
throats to get a slice of your business.
