Ted,

There is on www.machinerepair.com a book and video
they sell about scraping (plus some video clips). There is
also a book (don't remember the exact title) on machine
reconditioning which goes into depth on scraping.

The process is using a scraper (purchased or made from a file)
to scrape surfaces to a flat condition.
