I agree with Andy on this one. While you can use a lapping tool to smooth a
surface independently (if you have one smooth surface that you don't want to
wear and one "bumpy" on that you want to match). The whole theory to lapping
IS the wearing down (slightly) of the two parts so any microscopic
irregularities disappear and they become flat in relationship to each other.
Obviously, the worse the match, the more material you will have to remove
and adjust for dimensionally.

If lapping can only be done with a lap, and using lapping compound on 2
mating surfaces to smooth them up NEVER makes things better, why do custom
gunsmiths working on tightening up the slide-to-frame fit on auto pistols
use this technique?
