Put them upside down so the chips fall out.

as for the type and suppliers ? it depends on your needs and costs.
for free, there are optical interupter type units in mice and floppy
drives. There are flaged units (units with a mounted section that
breaks the beam, not sure of the proper name though) in fax machines
and printers.

Simple to use, very accurate and very repetitive.
