Dave,
The mouse and floppy drive idea is very handy, thanks. Any idea of where to
find specs for such reclaimed devices? It's great to have free stuff but
only as long as I can get it working. My main concern is that I have a
device and a clear method of attaining its functionality.

Put them upside down so the chips fall out.

as for the type and suppliers ? it depends on your needs and costs.
for free, there are optical interupter type units in mice and floppy
drives. There are flaged units (units with a mounted section that
breaks the beam, not sure of the proper name though) in fax machines
and printers.

Simple to use, very accurate and very repetitive.
