I really have no idea if water will work. It all depends on how
inefficent the material is turning it's vibratory energy into heat.
Water confined in a small space with no room to slosh around would act
like a solid (I think), but I have no idea what it's damping
properties are?? I am building a Steel tube gantry router and want it
light so I can move it around easy, but then be able to add damping
after I have it where I want it. Water would be VERY easy to use as
long as things are sealed up good, and I don't believe corrosion would
be a problem in a confined space with no oxygen floating around(could
be wrong). The ideal machine tool has very little mass and very high
damping, but usually materials with good damping qualities are VERY
heavy so it takes a lot of thought and outa the box thinking to make
something usable. This is a very interesting topic, and the best
solution may not be obvious.
