Hi Alex,
The spring would have to be quite stiff or as you say will set up another
source of oscillation , but it will Add much needed length to the resonant
rod.

I think you've got it the wrong way around. Adding a spring won't remove a
significant amount of energy, it'll just alter the resonant frequency of the
system. Adding a damper will absorb energy. I really don't know how much
damping you will get from filling the frame with water or oil, but soggy
teddy bears sound like a good idea to me ;)
