I agree with you totally. All my CNC machines have been what most would
consider bargains, and already have ballscrews and working servo's
already fitted, as well as all limit switches etc.

My 1st Interact with burnt out Heidenhain TNC145 cost me £250 say $450
I got more than that back by selling the good Servo drives.

Hardinge HXL-S 16C spindle with damaged Seimens 810T £1200 or say $2100

and my latest, a Leadwell Mini VMC (8 Station ATC, 350mm X travel) Blown
Meldas control £750 or say $1300.

Ony sour point about the leadwell is it's costing nearly 200 quid to
move it 1/4 mile!
