With some kind of closed-loop PWM motor speed control, at the least.

I don't know. I would have selected a dual control and a shunt motor,
and some sort of coordination between the field and armature control
to weaken the field above some particular speed. But, I kind of doubt
they did this with the low field resistance. It was probably hooked up
as a plain series motor. The 4 leads minimum have to be brought
out for reversing. There might be some magic switching the brushes
around for reducing sparking when going in either direction.
