Some cables that pre-date ECP didn't bother to hook up all the status
and control wires that ECP parallel port modes required (maybe on old
cables ERRROR or PE are open or maybe SEL was tied lo... in the
connector housing)

DB-25 connector has the same named signals just different pin locations.

Make sure you don't have an RS-232 cable :-) (which also uses DB-25
connectors. The PC chose to use different gender on PC LPT port to avoid
this issue)

This is exactly the stuff that confuses me. When I look up an IEEE-
1284, it is centronics on one end. My PC had a d-sub 25, and my USC
has a d-sub 25 connector. What am I missing?
