There are at least 3 types of 1284 cables. A common one is as you
describe, but there are also types with D connectors on both ends.
I use the Assmann AK733-1.8 or AK734-3 (last digit is length in meters)
from Digi-Key, their part number is AE1108 and AE1109, respectively.
This has a DB-25 male on one end, DB25 female on the other, and
jackscrews on both ends for securing the connectors.

(The 3rd type is male on both ends.)
