I too am a former TurboCAD v8 user.
Have a look at Alibre http://www.alibre.com/ you can download a free
demo.
Also, I just got a call from the TurboCAD people the other day offering
an upgrade to the current version (11?) for $199.
Have a look at Blender http://www.blender.org (free, but not cheap,
i.e. it's good stuff).
Also, Rhino has a lot of fans http://www.rhino3d.com .
Have a look at MeshCAM for converting STL and DXF to gcode
http://tinyurl.com/9snx5 .
