Gee, I thought that WAS the technical term !

Brushes are nice, and the bellows could work some of the time. If it
is rubber, it might melt or burn.

I would think you could make a projection that attached to the
carriage to protect the first 4 inches, and mount another one under
the chuck for another 6 inches and that would handle 90% of the swarf.

I agree that keeping it off the screw is the main objective.
