I would think you could make a projection that attached to the
carriage to protect the first 4 inches, and mount another one under
the chuck for another 6 inches and that would handle 90% of the swarf.
You're right, there are a few "Most of the time" fixes.
I've even taken it as far as this:

It just always seems to get in the way at the worst time.. I was hoping for
a fit and forget solution.. mcmaster carry some bellows that look like they
might do it. US$70+shipping to AU is a bit pricey for a bit of rubber, but
if it solves the problem..... Has anyone else used them?
