The licensing deal with computer manufacturers limits that OS to that
specific computer. Therefore you do not get any install media, and are not
able to (and not allowed to) install the OS on another PC, even if you trash
that one.
It's one way the computer manufacturer can offer the computer for less.
I have built all my own PCs, and purchased and used regular copies of
Windows XP pro (one for me, one for my wife). My copy has survived three
computers (and yes, I had to call that annoying registration line and tell
them I replaced the PC. I've done this twice, with no questions from them)
The full version of Windows XP Pro costs $299 retail ($99 for the home
edition). You can see how that would raise the cost of the average PC by
quite a bit if they didn't see the PC with the locked version.
That all being said, most retail PCs include a small partition on the drive
used for a system restore. It's usually accessed via the delete key or a
function key on start up (you'll see it flash on the screen - warm up your
monitor first if you don't use an LCD). My main beef with those is that they
typically do a complete wipe and replace. Check yours before you go that
route.

Hi Dave,
A copy of the distribution disk you say? I bought an IBM ThinkCentre
(tower) with XP pro on it, but did not receive a CD, or any manuals for
that matter! I didn't notice any XP folders. Certainly would like to
find that on MY computer! Any other details? One large folded sheet of
paper with "pictures" doesn't do it for me. I liked my first IBMs,
plenty of binders with REAL documentation! It took me 4 mo. to find the
"windoz D" key to substitute for the missing "desk" icon. "Where's the
Manual?"
