I agree 100% with Abby. I currently use a couple of LPT ports with my
MACH/Bridgeport setup, supplemented by a keyboard emulator for inputs. If I
did it over again, I would probably use a touch screen LCD monitor and
either a Modbus interface (ModIO) or (more likely) a PLC for the underlying
controls. There are many ways to skin a cat and the choice is able to be
made by the designer as far as what works best (or is more economical) in a
given situation.

careful when posting not very well thought-out messages like this, as it
will quickly devolve into a screaming match. Opinions allowed, but
outright mockery (especially with very little research to back it) is
never good.
You might also be surprised to find that many people on this list use
the parallel port for controlling their mills - it's actually quite a
good option because of it's low-cost and surprising reliablility. In
addition, Mach is one of the best machine controller packages (I know
of) on the market - a lot of people have very sucessfully refitted large
CNC machine to use mach as the controller as they find it preferable.
You can send G-codes down to a serial board, or drop in servo cards if
you want - but if the actual interface of the progam controlling this is
poor, you'll find the machine cumbersome and not very productive. In the
area of features and GUI, mach is excellent.
My 2c. Let's not turn this into a flame.
