With XP Pro you can display the registration key as follows:
Left click on "Start" in the lower left corner of the screen,
move the cursor over "My Computer" , right click and select Properties.
This should bring up the "System Properties" screen.
On the "General" tab you should now see "Registered To" with the 20-character
key.

Now you need to find an OEM (new equipment) disk. The disks are generic; the
serial number is not burned on the disk. An install on a new hard drive lets
you have 30 days to enter a valid registration key. Once you get it loaded,
get on a high speed Internet connection and download the updates from
MicroSloth. There will be a bunch.

I presume XP home works the same way.
