Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Manuals.

I just signed up with this group and have been following the thread with some interest.

Just couldnt resist putting in my 2 cents.

Your example refering to heathkit, they spent millions of dollars developing manuals to go along with their product. The same goes for Ramsey. Many many developement dollars are invested in manuals. Most times, more money is spent on the manual than in the engineering of the product. So the just of the point is, would you rather spend two or three times as much money on a kit, just to get a better instruction manual, along with the months or even years of time that it takes to develope foolproof instructions. I think that most hobbiest would not want to spend the extra money or the time waiting for the manual. I think it is just a matter of wanting a commercially developed product for a do it yourself price. After all, isnt it the money that keeps the hobbiest from buying a commercial product in the first place? If you buy a commercial product and it doesnt work, then you take it back and get another. If you decide to build it yourself, then you take on the
responsibility of making it work. Which includes figuring out what works and what doesnt, if you put to much voltage into a circuit and it blow. Then you should reduce the voltage and try again. If you try to pull to much current from a circuit and something pops, then you learned that there is a limit. You are the product testers for these hobbiest products.

He is an example of a large company selling million dollars machine. They have a circuit that drives an engraving head, that uses a bank of 12 power transistors. These are considered expendable parts, they blow several times a year, are about $20 a pop, sometimes a cascade failure happens and 6 will blow at one time. These machines are used 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Does it happen to every machine, NO, sometimes a machine would go a year or more without blow a part, then we would have a rash of failures. So Who is to blame, the designers that are using the parts well within the design specs of the chips, the operators that are using the machines, the makers of the chips, the person who soldered them into the circuit that applied to much heat and stressed the part. The fault lies in many, many places. And that can sometimes add up to chips that pop, even when used correctly.

Just my personal experiences.

When you sell to users who are not electronics savvy, you have to
factor in for the inevitable errors in construction and application.
Unless you take that out of the equation by not selling user-built
electronics. That's why we don't offer electronic "kits". Or bare
boards.

That is exactly correct, but then if you will permit me, we must also see
where a lot of the blame resides.

How many of you remember the old Heathkit manuals, well compare them to some
of the stuff that our present venders are putting out.
You guys will not, I am sure be happy with my remarks, but the manuals you
put out stink................ I have pity for the person trying to get your
stuff to work. And when they can't do it and quit, the entire DIY CNC hobby
suffers.....

I dare you to really look at the stuff your are putting out, in some cases
a person with decades of electronics experience can't find the necessary
information to correctly implement what you sell.

If you want to know what I think of your manuals, just ask me off
list............ But in most cases, I assure you, you will not be happy with my
reply...............

And I think I feel good about this letter........................
