But it shouldn't be.

I understand that a designer can't wait to get his product out there to
recoup his outlay, make a buck or just out of excitement that his new
baby is the best thing since sliced bread. But often without adequate
documentation the whole thing backfires somewhat. He finds he spends
more time answering the same old questions than he would have done to
write a proper manual in the first place. There's also the risk that the
customer isn't getting what he really needs, or the design is lacking
somewhere.

Better produce the documentation along with the design and release the
docs first. Sales may suffer, but there can be no misunderstanding then
of what the device can or can't do.

Got to agree with you Bill, all the technical specs of how the innards
work is often pretty useless without a "how to connect up" manual
written in plain English.
