This discussion is interesting.

I've read a little bit about the field. Using a camera to make measurements
is called photogrammetry. e.g.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photogrammetry
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=photogrammetry&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en

I've even bolted a digital camera and a laser pointer onto a mill or other cnc
system, such as a reprap, to scan an object in order to do "object
reconstruction" The laser pointer is directed at a glass rod to create a fan
shaped plane of light. The postioning system scans the object, software
processes the scan data and creates a .stl file, and a mill or reprap
recreates the object. It's called structured light scanning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_scanner#Structured_light

You can buy scanners, scanning heads for cnc systems, and software. I'm
interested in making and documenting a system.

Along with the obvious applications to reprap, I'd like to build a 3D scanning
head in order to scan oil clay models of jewelry or sculpture.
