Hi, Brian.
Thank you for pointing out the way to do a counterweight for the Z-axis
head/column and it gave me another perspective of how to do the Z-axis.
However, it was entirely my fault that I did not make myself clear on how I
did my Z-axis. I did not motorized the Z-axis head/column but instead, I
only drive the spindle head (or, is it called quill?).
Here are some pictures of what I did:

Considering the above, I believe I do not have to counterweight the Z-axis
column. Or, am I wrong? (And it will not be the first time I made mistakes
in my CNC venture :-)

The point I was making was not to do with rigidity,
but with a counter-weight to balance the weight of
your
z-axis. Imagine 2 weights on either side of a pulley?
you can balance the weights and then your steppers
wont have to work so hard.
