For once it makes me feel more comfortable with my z-axis conversion with
your comment below.
Yes, the bottom end of the ball scew do need some kind of a cover. I may use
silicon sealant (as someone else did in another website) to seal it off or
some kind of brush. Thanks for pointing it out.

Form your pics (posted on one of the other groups) counterweighting
is absolutely not any part of the answer, as you are driving the
quill, not the whole of the head. Also, as some round column mills
have a tendency to lose X-Y position as you crank the head up and
down, you've probably gone the right way here.

Its pretty obvious (to me, at least!) from your pics that this is the
right way to go (or use a finer pitch leadscrew.
One point to watch - in your setup the bottom end of the screw is
completely exposed and will attract swarf/dust from milling
operations. Unless you want to disassemble/clean the screw and nut on
a regular basis you are going to need some kind of cover over the screw.
