Just as the fellow on the video states - "Polygon Turning". The
process goes back to the automatic screw machine days and has been
adopted into CNC machine with high speed synchonization between the
spindle motor and the drive motor for the cutter head. The cutting
tool looks very much like a fly cutter and is spinning in counter
rotation to the main spindle. Depending on the ratio of speed between
the two spindles and the number of teeth on the cutter head, you can
get a good variation in the number of flats.
A google search will probably show some graphical details which really
helps to understanding the mechanics of it.
