Graham,

You could use 4 R/C model aircraft nosewheel steering arms, mated to
4 nylon delrin spacers/ shaft collars. Turn these into 4 VERY
coarse "screws" to effect the lift.

Use a CNC to cut mating angles on each mating face and then a pull
of the arm(s) will spread the plates. (Assumes the "die plate" 4
post arrangement previously described)

Advantage over eccentric cams is that there is less wear, and
potential for backlash or uneven or lost motion. Also the
spreading/lifting force is axial and right at the 4 "corners". (you
could likely use two or three instead of four, depending upon size
